Integration of micro-scale based reaction unit with downstream processing offers several advantages for process intensification. Examples of in situ product removal within two-liquid phase systems studied by our research group involve isoamyl acetate production ( Žnidaršič Plazl and Plazl, 2009 , Pohar et al., 2009 , Novak and Žnidaršič Plazl, 2013 ), butyl butyrate synthesis ( Pohar et al., 2012 ) and cholesterole biotransformation ( Marques et al., 2010 , Marques et al., 2012 ).
